1 Sheet

No Envelope

Snap pack direct mail is a pressure sealed format where one sheet is printed on both sides, folded, and sealed without an envelope. The perforated edges create a tamper-evident seal that recipients tear open to read the content inside.

The format has been used in direct mail for decades, originally for billing and tax documents, and is now one of the highest-performing formats for marketing campaigns. Snap packs achieve exceptionally high open rates because recipients perceive them as official or important documents rather than marketing mail.

From a production standpoint, snap packs are faster and cheaper to produce than envelope mailings because there is no separate envelope, no inserts, and no inserting step. One sheet goes in, a sealed mail piece comes out.

Why It Works

Dramatically higher open rates than standard envelope mail
Approximately 40% lower production cost than envelope mailings
Standard class postage as low as $0.36 per piece for automated mailings
Full color variable data printing on every panel of the mailer
USPS automation compatible for the lowest available postage rates
Single production step: print, fold, seal. No envelope, no inserting, no stuffing
Tamper-evident perforated edges show if the piece was accessed before delivery
Available in 2-panel (letter size) and 3-panel (legal size) formats

How Snap Pack Direct Mail Works

The snap pack production process starts with a flat sheet of paper, typically 8.5" x 11" for 2-panel or 8.5" x 14" for 3-panel formats. Both sides are printed in full color using high-speed digital or offset presses. Variable data (names, addresses, personalized offers, unique codes) is applied during printing.

After printing, the sheet is folded and run through a pressure sealer. The sealer applies thousands of pounds of pressure per square inch to activate a cohesive coating on the edges of the paper. This coating bonds the layers together, creating a sealed mail piece with tamper-evident perforated edges on all sides.

The finished piece looks like a sealed document. There is no envelope. The address is printed directly on the outside panel. USPS Intelligent Mail barcodes are applied for automation rate qualification. The piece goes directly from the pressure sealer to USPS trays for mailing.

Recipients open the piece by tearing along the perforated edges. The rough, torn edges are part of the design. They signal that the piece was sealed and has not been opened before, which reinforces the perception that the content inside is important or confidential.

Why Snap Packs Outperform Envelopes

The economics of snap pack direct mail are straightforward. A traditional envelope mailing requires printing the letter, printing the envelope, printing any inserts, then inserting and sealing. Each step adds cost, time, and the possibility of errors. Snap packs eliminate all of that.

The open rate advantage comes from psychology. A sealed, perforated mail piece triggers the same response as receiving a tax form, a bank statement, or an official notice. Recipients do not throw it away unopened the way they do with an envelope that is obviously a marketing piece. They tear it open first, then decide.

Production cost drops by approximately 40% compared to envelope mailings because snap packs use a single sheet of paper and skip the envelope entirely. There is no inserting labor, no envelope stock, and no risk of mechanical jams during the inserting process. For campaigns of 25,000 pieces or more, this translates to meaningful savings.

When to Use Snap Pack Direct Mail

Snap packs perform best when the content inside matches the official appearance of the sealed exterior. Campaigns that work well in the format include pre-approved financial offers, insurance policy notices, billing statements, tax-related mailings, and any campaign where the recipient should feel compelled to open the piece.

The format is less effective for brand awareness campaigns, catalogs, or mailings where the recipient needs to see visual product imagery before deciding to engage. Postcards and oversized mailers are better for those applications.

Volume matters for cost efficiency. Snap pack campaigns are most cost-effective at volumes of 10,000 pieces or more, where presort postage discounts and production efficiencies kick in. The minimum run is 10,000 pieces.
